This chapter has several typos in it. In fact this entire 6th edition has more typos and other sorts of errors than previous editions. But it's still my favorite textbook, by a long shot.
Anyway, in some of the diagrams showing discrimination, the label for the SΔ box is SD rather than SΔ. That's not too bad and I think most students either see it and understand that it's just a typo or, in many cases they don't even notice it.
More important, though, is the error in the paragraph right before the diagram on p. 205. The boldface "punishment-based SD" should actually say "punishment-based SΔ." In this example, the mild temperature "signals" that the punishment contingency is NOT in effect, and that's the function of an SΔ.
On p. 206, 2nd column, next-to-last paragraph, the 6th line should say "reinforcement-based SΔ" instead of "reinforcement-based SD."
On p. 214 both diagrams show SD in the box below the Behavior box. In both cases that should be SΔ instead.
The diagram on p. 216 has the same problem.

I teach courses in the principles and applications of Behavior Analysis, the science and technology of behavior, which is different from other approaches in psychology in that it takes behavior as a subject matter in its own right, rather than as a tool for studying something else, such as the mind. The main purpose of this blog is to be a supplementary means of communication with students who are taking my courses.
